Customers competing in World Supersport 600 classes often ask, what’s the big difference with the WSS600_A MKE7? I have a 2018 WSS ECU — can I use this, and/or simply flash it with the latest firmware?
The answer to that is no, unfortunately. The new ECU has quite a lot of differences to the older MKE7’s – both in hardware and in software:
- Internal chipset to properly manage the ABS sensors
- IMU for crash detection (the Yamaha Kit ECU had an IMU, most Yamaha WSS not)
- Wi-fi (to be enabled in a future update)
- Additional memory (for possible future internal data logger update)
- Shares the same firmware across 600 makes, to balance performance and opportunities for all teams
- Uses special firmware and runs a small section of Manufacturer Maps (also called Engine or .dis)
- Provides additional sections and encryption for FIM / championships to manage RPM limits and other specific checks
So, it’s not possible to simply update the older ECU. There have been quite a lot of revisions of the ECU even though they all look the same externally!
